I do not think it is too long of a step to say they have behaved in my opinion not as an admin should. You all hate on .world yet the admins here are the most professional on the lemmyverse.

It is not for me to say how this instance should choose admins but I stand by removing comments that delight in an important person’s ailment and I stand by a community I have moderated for 2 years now.

No, it isn’t. You are entitled to remove whatever you want, but if its because of power tripping over your religious biases then you can expect to be called out for it. There were some good suggestions in the YPTB post for how to improve your community rules, but as always with you super professional LW mods, you just wanna double down on the wrong thing instead of accepting community feedback.

I do not go into your community to try and convert users to religion so why do you complain when you troll a news community?

I’ve never shitposted in your community at all. If you are talking about my one comment you removed and banned me for that was critical of the Catholic church’s endless cover-ups of child sex abuse scandals, then guilty as charged I suppose. If you want to moderate your community in a way that censors any criticism of religion, especially when it’s a FACT, then maybe you shouldn’t be moderating a world news comm in the first place, because that requires some level of basic journalistic integrity and appreciation for uncensored facts.

I’m a gender abolitionist philosophically, so I get what you are saying and I would also prefer for everyone to agree to adopt using gender neutral language and be done with it. But we should still respect the preferred pronouns of others, because it isn’t up to you or me to force that choice on everyone else. It’s not much different from a Republican (for example) refusing to use she/her towards a trans woman. For some folks their pronouns are super important to them, so imo it’s just disrespectful not to use them when they are stated.

The issue for me is that you were the one insisting that it was “arrogant” of certain Spanish speakers to have the temerity to consider themselves American by virtue of living in The Americas, just because the USA enjoy cultural hegemony in the English speaking world. I guess if all you want to do is reify US cultural hegemony, then go for it I suppose. But English isn’t a static language and cultural hegemony isn’t unchanging either, it is constantly being contested. In the context of the US renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, I do feel your position comes off as a bit racist even if it wasn’t your intention. If all you were saying is “this is the commonly understood meaning of ‘American’ in the English speaking world if you exclude any additional content”, then I agree that’s true. But you can get there without claims of arrogance and without excluding the possibility of differing interpretations.

YDI. Seems like a really dumb take. AFAIK to many folks (not from the USA) North Americans are from Canada, USA, Mexico combined with the Central and South American countries, they are collectively known as The Americas. Everyone in the Americas is American in the same sense that all Africans are African despite there being many countries. The arrogance of USAsians co-opting the name of the whole continent of The Americas as though they are the only country that matters is kind of mind boggling.

I guess, do whatever fits your budget and/or conscience? I don’t think we push a particular philosophy. Folks pirate for different reasons.
