Basically, house Republicans voted to defund DC police because even though it’s not federal money, they fact that that have the power to pass laws affecting DC means that they can claim these as “cuts”. Again, defunding the DC police doesn’t help the federal government save a dime. But it’s technically a budget cut, just not the budget cut they’re supposed to working on. Yes, it’s that silly.

The good news is that we now have one party interested in defunding the police.

The bad news is that they’re a party of criminals who have a vested interest in doing so.

The moment they had the power to cut funding so they could give more tax breaks go the rich.

      • So that’s where the refund the police movement went wrong? They just needed to say they would use the money to enrich themselves? Or no, it has to be like already established rich whites?

Specifically, this action talked about in the article is an addition to the GOP spending bill which is awaiting vote in the senate OR upon filibuster could be handed back to the house for reconciliation.

The bill also cuts medicare, agriculture, education, and commerce investments.

They’re looking to halve the deficit by cutting 2 Trillion in spending so that they can extend their TCJA tax cuts which adds 4.5 trillion net loss for the government.

THE HEIGHT OF FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY CUTTING PROGRAMS THAT BANK A NET GAIN OVER TIME

It kind of feels like tacking on the defund the police thing is so that headlines like this can be run. And Republicans then can be like “ohhh democrats DONT want to defund the police? Would you look at that! 😏”

When really, any resistance will be over the cuts to social entitlements and welfare as you helpfully pointed out.

I feel like I’m trapped in the SAW House and a bunch of people with me keep insisting it’s a normal house and we are waiting for the dinner party to start. And I keep screaming, The invitation said DONNER PARTY

Either way— thanks for writing that out for everyone it’s kind of you to take the time :)
